Hearts and Dreams
By Jim Adams

Hearts and Dreams

I dreamed I was running on the Northern Central Trail, running with two women, two close friends that I have run with throughout the year. I ran between them, and as we ran in silence on the long run I was asked to tell a story.

Sometimes I have jokes, and sometimes long tales, but on this day I was having problems remembering any of my repertoire. Finally, the history of the NCR Trail occurred to me, and I inquired, "I have a story, but it's grim and gory and bloody. Do you want to hear it?"

The girl on my right said, "I love winter and the snow it brings, and I won't run again until the spring."

The girl on my left said, "I'd rather hear a love story than something grimly gory."

Devoid of original material, I filked Paul Simon, speaking aloud:

"What a dream I had, pressed in organdy
Clothed in crinoline of smoky burgundy
Running in the rain, running in the rain."
"I ran down empty streets, down past the shop displays
I heard cathedral bells ringing down the alleyways
As I ran on, as I ran on"

I spoke to the girl on my left, saying,
"And then you ran with me your cheeks flushed with the night
We ran through frosted fields of juniper and lamplight I held your hand, I held your hand…."

Then I turned to the girl on my right and quoted, "And then when I awoke and found you warm and near I kissed your honey hair with my grateful tear
Oh I love you girl, Ohhhh I love you!!!"

Then the girl on my left asked, "If you dream about me why do you love her?"

And the girl on my right asked, "If you love me why do you dream about her?"

And I had nothing to say as they ran away. A cold wind blew off the lake, chilling me to the bone as my heart ached and once again I was all alone.

Then when the morning sun peeked through the dawn I realized that they both were gone and indeed had never been here and once more I had been dreaming, dreaming again.

Late Night Ramblings On Valentine's Eve

Once I ran fast, now I am slow
As revelations bare my soul
Of times gone by and future dreams,
Of races lost amid life's toll.

My spirit drifts on rippling streams
That flow through fate's foreboding schemes.
Now pleasant smiles and laughing eyes
Through hardened heart have cut deep seams.

How I long to run by your side
Matching your patient, graceful stride.
Just two of us, we're such close friends
Guarding two hearts from love's strong tide.

Knowing not how life's run may end
Valentine's Day I've dared to send
Some thoughts of you, my special friend,
And dreams of you, my very close friend.
