Baltimore Area Trail Runs

( Currently undergoing construction, bear with us.  The new trail index page is here)

For purposes of this discussion, the NCR Trail and the B&A Trail do not count as trail runs, since they are basically converted rail-to-trails projects that are somewhat civilized.

Robert E. Lee Park-- miles of trails.  The primary trail leaves the picnic area by the pavilion and crosses the light rail tracks.  Mostly flat next to Lake Roland, but whenever the trail splits, bear toward the lake unless you are in an adventurous exploratory mode.  The side trails wander throughout the Bare Hills area, and can be very rugged and confusing at times.  After crossing a foot bridge, the trail continues north all the way to Ruxton Road.  If you turn to the east at the bridge, a side trail will take you to L'Hirondelle Country Club a mile away.  Bear west on Ruxton Road, and at the exit ramp from I-83 north follow the concrete culvert up through a hole in the chain link fence and pick up the trail back to Robert E. Lee Park.
(Updated - google map of the main route here)

Access the Robert E. Lee Park by driving north on Falls Road to Lake Avenue, then turn right down to the light rail parking lot and follow the entrance signs to the park.

Wyman Park Trail--Actually a continuation of the rail line running through R E Lee, this trail parallels Stony Run from just south of Northern Parkway all the way down to Johns Hopkins.  At the northern end, park in the Gilman athletic parking lots and access the trail behind the gym.  At Johns Hopkins, a trail leads down from the parking lot at Homewood Field off of San Martin Drive, crosses the creek, and connects.  There is one tricky area if you do not want to cross University Parkway...after exiting the wooden bridge, run along Linkwood Lane for about hundred yards, then take the game trail down and jump over the culvert. From Hopkins to Gilman and return, about five miles.  From Hopkins down to Wyman Park, add another two miles.  The trail ends at Wyman Park Drive about a quarter of mile from Druid Hill Park for even more miles of traffic-free running.

Cromwell Valley Park/Loch Raven Reservoir--

From the Beltway 695 take Exit 27 Dulaney Valley Road north.  Turn left onto Seminary Avenue and park in the Morman church parking lot on your right.  (Be considerate of the congregation on service days!)  Cross Dulaney Valley road and pick up the trail on the north side of the road.

Or go to Peerce's Plantation and park either there or a mile down Loch Raven at Morgan Mill Road.  A trail runs along the north side of the road until the bridge over the reservoir.  About two hundred yards past the bridge, take the trail leading up the steep climb to the top of the ridge.

Or, conversely, go to the Cromwell Valley Road/Loch Raven Boulevard exit, and go north on Cromwell Valley Road to Willow Springs Park on the right.  Pick up the network of trails in any number of directions from there.

This whole system interweaves for miles and miles throughout Loch Raven Reservoir.  Many are maintained by mountain bikers.

Susquehanna State Park, home of the Hinte-Anderson Trail Run 50k in the Harford County area has a great number of trails for a variety of running styles. If you like strenuous hilly courses, Susquehanna has a great number of seriously challenging trail networks. On the other hand, if you like flat terrain for your runs, you can run on Stafford Road along the Susquehanna River, and then enter the towpath to the Conowingo Dam.  (more)
